Coverage map and challenge

Before I got the Garmin PDM (Pace Distance Monitor), I stuck to known routes with known distances. These were mostly city recreation trails. With the PDM, I'm running in my neighborhood. It occurred to me that with the PDM, I can run other neighborhoods. So, for my long runs, I started doing "coverage runs." That is, through a series of "coverage runs", I'm trying to run every road in the city twice.

Other runners might want to do something similar. They might try it with or without competition. With competition, runners might try to finish a goal area before other runners. Or, there could be groups, seeing which group of runners can finish a goal area before other groups.

It would help if Garmin Connect could add a "coverage map" feature. At first, each run could have a checkbox with label "Coverage Run." When checked, that run will appear on a "coverage map." A coverage map would show all runs with the box checked.

Next, Garmin could allow users to "create a coverage map", with the runner providing a name. With this feature, the check box would be replaced with a selection list. If a run is a coverage run, the runner can chose the map name from the list to have that run added to that/those coverage map(s).

Of course, if there is going to be competition, runners would want the option to make maps visible to others.

And, if there are going to be group coverage areas, Garmin Connect would have to support group management, and any runner in a group could add a coverage run to the group map.
  • By the way, why is my goal to run all roads twice instead of once? There are a lot of dead-ends, and intersections where three road segments meet. So, I would have to run all dead-end segments, and a lot of other segments twice. If I have to run so many segments twice, I might as well run all of them twice. Also, planning on running each segment twice on a coverage run simplifies planning.
