VO2 Max Issues

I have been an endurance athlete doing triathlons for the last three years. I began as a cyclist 18 years ago, and would say I’m worlds better cycling than running. Recently, I purchased a Forerunner 935 and have been using the Garmin Connect app. For the first few months, I have been receiving what I would say to be accurate “training statuses”. I was doing my cycling on a fluid trainer.

About two weeks ago, I purchased a smart trainer and have been using the Zwift program. Since then, my “training statuses” have been “unproductive”.

My running VO2 Max is at 49, and in the “excellent” category. My cycling VO2 Max, however, is at 38 and “poor”.

I find the discrepancy unbelievable at best. I’m hoping that I’m doing something wrong in the program that someone can identify and help me with. I have been using the 935 for the past 2 1/2 months, and use the Garmin Tri-HRM chest strap along with a Cycleops Magnus Trainer.
Thanks!
  • How long have you been using the FR935? The device needs some time to more accurately assess the VO2max. Also HR data is essential. If you use the built-in optical HR, then its unreliability can skew the VO2max result.

I use the tri-hrm, and have been using the 935 on a daily basis for 2 1/2 months.
