In the old version of garmin connect, it was possible to display the number of steps during an activity. In the new version, this option was removed. See discussion here:

This option was very helpful for my daily training of mindful walking meditation. Please put the steps back to garmin connect!
  • Yes please put it back , I use it all the time
  • Yes, please, I need them too!!!
  • Yes seems arbitrary to remove them :(

Interesting that you write about losing the ability to show steps for an activity.
I have my Garmin fenix 5 for roughly 2 months now, but I was never able to see "steps" counted for any activity, just as a "per day" counter.
And I was quite surprised by that (wondering if they cannot link the "steps" widget into activities?), as this was (to me obviously) there for activity tracking on the device I used before (MS Band 2 (R.I.P.)).

Tracking steps seems arbitrary for some activities like e.g. strength training (and obviously useless for cycling or swimming), but it is even missing for walking / running related activities.
The fenix 5 can track (and subsequently show in connect) all kinds of stuff for such activities (most are useless for normal users except for absolute sports / fitness nuts) like barometric pressure, pace in n varieties, etc.
But simple tracking of steps during an activity (including showing this on the watch during the activity and obviously then synching to connect) is not possible. This is quite annoying.

So if this was there before: Bring it back!
If it was never available: This is a must have - and from a programming perspective, it should not be impossible. Everyone else can do it with their devices, so Garmin, you should be able to track steps for activities, too - at least for the ones that people use their feet for.
  • I can show the number of steps in the activity on my VA while the activity is in progress. In fact, I did 9,893 steps in an activity this morning. I just show the field on my watch. The only thing is that once you stop the activity, the display changes to a prompt so you have to remember what the steps were before pressing stop. I would be surprised if the F5 didn't have that ability.

It's really connect that's the problem.

For counting steps during an activity I always use a footpot. There is a step data field in the connect iq store:

    https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/5483a0d2-0627-4cef-b6b3-131393fda35f

But user report that it is not working or that it is not precise enough. Also it only works with the internal accelerometer, and does not work with my footpod.

On my vivoactive HR, using the protocol "indoor walking", there is also a field counting steps during an activity. But it does not work with my footpod either.

Does someone know an option how to count steps on a garmin whatch which works with a footpod?

When there is no option on garmin whatches to display steps during an activity tracked with a footpod, there is the app a training tracker for android in the play store. It has many fields, one among is steps during an activity. It works with ant+ and bluetooth smart sensors. Activities can be uploaded via runkeeper to garmin connect, but no steps are displayed on garmin connect.

Still I miss this feature to have a column with steps for making statistics on GARMIN CONNECT.

Bring it back GARMIN, bring it back!!!

The same problem with the Garmin connect app "Indoor Walk"

    https://apps.garmin.com/de-AT/apps/eacc349c-94b9-4c3c-a92b-f3816e4fb3ad

This app works with a foot pod, but does not count the steps of the foot pod. It must be a general problem, see threat here:

    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/running/151860-i-m-confused-does-the-foot-pod-not-count-steps

So bring the steps back to Garmin connect!
