Comparing stats year on year

I know this must have been asked before but I couldn't find the answer. I have been logging activities (let's use running as an example) over a few years now and I want to be able to compare results.

Example: Total distance run 2017, 2016, 2015, ... or total time spent running (activity duration total).

I can find a report for current year by last 7 Days, 4 Weeks, 6 Months and 12 Months; but what I want is to compare year totals.

Ideas?

Go to Reports=>Progress Summary=>Change to "Group by Year"=>Report on "Custom Dates" and enter year range=>Set "Activity Type" e.g. to Running=>Click "Customize" and add and remove…

Go to Reports=>Progress Summary=>Change to "Group by Year"=>Report on "Custom Dates" and enter year range=>Set "Activity Type" e.g. to Running=>Click "Customize" and add and remove desired fields from the report=>Export to Excel...finally in Excel make pretty graphs.

Jeez Garmin that sucks. There must be a better way?

For example in Runkeep I just go to Reports=>Lifetime and I get a nice graph (customisable):

Couple of options, none of which are ideal:

1) Sync to strava, use veloviewer.com to compare year-by-year totals (but veloviewer isn't free)
2) Sync to strava, use the free stravistix desktop Chrome extension to compare year-by-year totals.

3) Use runalyze.com to crunch the numbers. Unfortunately you have to manually upload your history. But it's free!

If 3) interests you and you need a way to download all your FIT files from Garmin Connect, I use a modified version of this python script:

Agreed, Runkeeper is much more simple. Hopefully this will be addressed.
