Can Garmin connect handle 2 devices?

I bought a an Edge 520 a week ago and was thinking about getting a vivofit3. But I'm not sure how the software will handle the data of both devices when used at the same time. For example on my ride to work (52km) I would like to use my edge but during the day the vivofit. Will the vivo still record data during the ride and create a double activity in Garmin connect or can I decided which device should be used once I got 2 devices linked with connect? Hope my question makes sense. If the software can't handle it, I would otherwise just get a different brand and keep the data separate.

Thx for any help

Manny
  • From what I read, the Vivofit 3 does automatic activity detection, but only for running or walking. I don't think it detects cycling.

If it does, any duplicate activities can always be deleted afterwards, You can easily tell which device was used to record an activity.

Having used devices from different manufacturers before and now using devices from the same manufacturer, my experience is that you are better off if everything is from the same manufacturer so all your data is in the one place.

I use a 230 as an activity tracker/running watch and a 520 for on the bike. I have no issues because to record the same activity on both would require some deliberate actions from me. You might be better off in the long run to spend more to get a better device that will better serve your needs.

Before you buy the Viofit3, check the return policy where you're buying it from as if it doesn't do what you want, you may be able to return it on that basis.

Thank you very much. I defiantly would prefer an Garmin and have all the data in the same place. I was looking at the vivosmart3 as well but essentially I only need something basic. Counting steeps etc so I get enough movement during the day. All my other activities are water based and I don't really need a tracker for that. But I defiantly will ask about the return policy just in case, good idea.

    Cheers Manny

According to Garmin's FAQ about MoveIQ, an activity recorded on the Vivofit 3 will not show up in the activities list, only on the timeline.

You can use the Vivofit 3 for steps and then record the cycling with the Edge. The mobile app and bluetooth can handle that no problem.
  • I'd be happy if it could handle one correctly.

I actually own the Forerunner 235, Fenix 3HR, Vivomove and Vivosmart 3 and the Connect app handles all 4. The thing you will need to do is set whichever one you want to track what you're doing at that moment in time as the "preferred activity tracker". So say for example you are going for a bike ride for 2 hours. You can wear both devices but you just need to make sure that your Edge 520 is set to the "preferred activity tracker" during that ride. After the ride, sync everything and once your bike activity is uploaded, set your Vivifit 3 or whatever you're going to wear all day as your preferred. Solved.
  • Incorrect. The 520 cannot be set as an activity tracker.

The reason why that is there is so you can set which device you want as your master activity tracker. For example, you have a Vivofit device that you wear all day. You also have a Fenix device that you use for activities. The Fenix device is also set to track steps. You have your Vivofit set as your preferred tracker. When you're wearing your Fenix device and not your Vivofit, any steps recorded on the Fenix will get synced to Garmin Connect and when you next sync your Vivofit, your steps from the Fenix get synced across to the Vivofit which now has a reading for both devices.
  • One problem that I had was that Strava would link to EVERY activity on VAHR. Not just the biking. So things like strength training and yoga went to Strava.

I decided to setup a 2nd account. One only has the Edge 500, The other the VAHR.
