Two questions: First, what are the units for stride length? It cannot be feet, but if I have US units, is it in yards or meters? Second, how is it determined? As distance divided by the number of steps, or by some calculation based on height and the amplitude of arm swing? Or does it work one way for outdoor walking and another for indoor?
In the exported csv file, the stride length as reported varies quite a bit. As I have not selected a custom stride length, something is going on but I can not find any information on this. Some of the reported numbers are way off: For a leisurely walk through a show garden, the stride length is 1.25. This is not plausible as either meters or yards. For indoor walks (treadmill, ellipticals, Wii Fit), it varies from .6 to .7 which seems a bit short. Only plausible number is an outdoor brisk walk with both arms free over a measured distance, where the stride length is given as 0.84, which is reasonable if in meters.
I have Garmin Connect send data to Limeade, a health coaching site used by my employer. I am trying to pin down how Limeade is getting its step count it is recording, and it might be easier to first figure out what GC is doing.
