User account/email problem

Trying to update my email address to my personal one (let's call it [email][email protected][/email]) from my work one. I log in with [email][email protected][/email], that's my username and my email is [email][email protected][/email] ... changing the email address to [email][email protected][/email] gives me a "that user already exists" error so I can't change to my personal email! Help..?!
