How can I reset my steps data as a device error has messed up my account

Back in March I had an issue with my Garmin vivoactive HR it decided I had done 1,479,956,918 Steps in a day.

Now when I look at my Graphs it's all useless as I only see a big bar for this error in March.

There must be a way to either delete all steps data and start from scratch or at least clear all data from that month.
  • If you want to do it yourself, your only option is to create a new account. Then you can export/import activities to the new account which can be kludgy and won't get your steps, sleep, daily HR, etc. into the new account. You'd pretty much be starting from scratch.

Your best shot would be to contact tech support who may or may not be able to help you.
  • Isn't that so nice of Garmin to screw something up and leave you with no way to correct it? It's our data/info we should be able to make edits!
  • Actually, if you check back in the forum for posts a year or o ago, you'll find that there are very good reasons for that including supporting company sponsored health programs and cheaters. It may not apply in your case and you may not agree with the reasons but there is a reasonable logic.

That argument is Horse Hockey. We can change all other attributes in a walk, but not steps? So those of us not in a company sponsored plan should have to put up with inaccurate results? Where the watch grossly screws up .. or for activities it's not capable of calculating steps there should be a way to edit/correct steps.

Even if the reason you offer were valid, and I don't agree it is, at the very least Garmin could have a an option available in the user's account/profile that would let users in non-company sponsored plans edit and fix what it fails to do ...and or can't do. IMO there is simply no excuse for Garmin to not let me be the keeper of MY data/info.

What if I need to manually add a walk - I should not get credit for the steps?

Inherent in Garmin's reason for not allowing editing of steps point out how important they think the accuracy of them are and I agree the accuracy is important and exactly why I should be able to edit them when they are wrong. Sheer stupidity and arrogance on Garmin's part for not allowing editing of steps.
  • Sorry you feel that way. Have you contacted support yet?

Believe, me Garmin knows exactly how I feel about it. I have contacted support as well as submitted in the ideas link.

Also, the more I think about it - if I were in a company sponsored plan and they were making decisions based on inaccurate and or garbage data GARMIN collected, I'd be be flat out pissed. There are things Garmin could easily do to address the situation. At the very least when steps are obviously and grossly wrong for a walk activity, Garmin could simply use the user profile, with custom stride length or average stride length based on height, and back in to steps using distance and stride length. This should be common sense not rocket science for a company in their line of business.

Any reason Garmin comes up with for not addressing this issue point blank means Garmin is ok with it customers living with inaccurate data. In the end it does not speak highly of Garmin in my opinion and I can only hope bringing this to light either prompts them to rethink it and or possibly persuades someone from buying a Garmin product.
  • I also suggested to Garmin that they include an option to let users delete their own steps and sleep data. Although not the best solution, it would help to be able to delete incorrect huge numbers of steps. According to Garmin the developers are 'thinking about it'. Hopefully they'll get around to writing the actual code.

Maybe there is alternative software available to keep a record of steps and sleep. I'm using some homebrew app myself (I had historical steps- and sleep data from other devices before switching to Garmin, and wanted to keep it all comparable and in one place), so it's possible in principle.
  • Garmin needs to own up to the fact that there are gaps in step counting that need addressed. I don't really care how they resolve, but damn it resolve it...

    Just my opinion, But

    1) Every activity should have the ability to disable step counting, Sorry Garmin - but believe it not we don't want steps counted when we are riding a bicycle!

    2) When I am doing an activity like inside walking or out cutting the grass and my arms are not swinging, believe it or not, I realize and understand the watch can't count steps. But If I am outside and using GPS, it's a no brainer to back in to steps from distance and stride length. Worse yet, if I bought and am using a frigging Garmin foot pod use the steps from it.(also a no brainer)

    3) Last but not least, if all else fails let us edit the steps, We can change/cheat/lie about the distance , time, avg. HR, Max HR, yet we are expected to believe the line of BS about steps being some sacred piece of data that can't be changed? Hogwash - this is the biggest BS excuse I have ever heard.

I bought my watch and when the steps are wrong, I accept that Garmin will not and or can't 100% of the time get things right, but when they don't I darn sure expect I should have a way to correct them. It's that simple.
