I thought there used to be a way to automatically add gear to your activities, for example since first use. On a related note, I wish we could adjust the first-use date. I put in my cycling shoes on the date that I created it as gear in GC, but would like to adjust it to the date that I originally bought them and automatically have it added to all my bike rides since then.

Yes, ifyou have the presence of mind to diligently to add the gear item and the default gear assignment rule to Garmin Connect on or before the date of first use.

It doesn't and wouldn't work that way anyway; default gear assignment occurs only at the point when an activity record is uploaded to (or imported into) Garmin Connect, and never retrospectively. Even if you could change the First Use date for a gear item after it has been created in the database, you would still need to manually upload (or import) all the relevant past activities again ? as well as manually delete the previously uploaded ?duplicates? ? for automatic gear assignment to occur for them.
There is no easy way to update records retrospectively en masse for the user's convenience. You may as well just delete the gear item after creating and saving it in the first instance, if you made a mistake with the First Use date, and create it anew with the correct First Use date. Obviously, the later you discover your mistake and the more work you've already put in assigning that gear item to activities, the more rework will be involved.
I would like to enhance the auto gear. Right now I can only select one thing for cycling. How about giving me more control, ie for mountain biking let me make a different auto selection vs road cycling. Same thing with treadmill vs road vs trail running, how about separate control for each of those?
- Create a new piece of gear e.g. a Sidi Genius 5 with a start date in the past e.g. 09/07/2011 - Set it as the default for e.g. Running - You will be asked to change the default from the current default if it is set. Say yes. - A box then appears "Existing Activities X Add to all Running activities since 09/07/2011." - Check the box.
You could delete the gear item with the wrong date, create it again with the correct date, and then automatically assign it as the default using this method.
It used to be possible to see all the activities assigned to a piece of gear but that has been changed so that you only see the most recent 25. This would have been helpful in checking your work, but alas it has gone.

Oh, I didn't know that. Perhaps it's because I always add new gear items on or before the date of actual first use; and, changing the default assignment rule when editing a gear item that has been previously created does not offer that option, so I haven't come across it myself.
