Creating road/cycle path courses: Garmin Connect or Basecamp?

Hi All. For creating courses using roads or cycle paths, can anyone help me understand which is the best tool - Connect or Basecamp? I have been using Connect - it seems straightforward to use in comparison - but finding some nuances with it, such as edited courses not updating on my Edge (commented on a separate thread here https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-820-aa/160366-). So just wondering if there are any advantages to using Basecamp?
From a Garmin perspective, does anyone know if one platform is likely to supersede the other one? Thanks...
  • Can't answer as to which one is best for you, but it appears that BaseCamp development has ceased, so don't expect any improvements. Personally I find it works well for me and does what I want. Its advantage over Connect, for me at least, is that you can use far more many different map types.
  • I find GC in the UK much worse than strava and ridewithgps. Don't know BC. GC sends you the wrong way around roundabouts, tries to send you on non existent bike paths even when you are on a road and you can't do a "save as" to create similar routes. I didn't realise how bad it was until trying the others. Its only plus is the ability to upload the course from mobile GC without plugging the unit into a computor. I know there's a 3rd party solution for this but i don't use IQ as i think the unit is flaky enough.

  • for new routes, i tend to go out & ride them, then when i get back upload the activity to GC, open it & name it, then click the cog & then save as route, job done

Great, thanks for the replies everyone. In that case I think I will avoid the learning curve on basecamp and stick with GC. Will also check out ridewithgps and strava...
