Heart Rate Zones

Hi,

What is the best way of calculating heart rate zones? Garmin Connect gives 3 options to choose from. Most difference is the calculation of zone 2. I am using zone 2 run as recovery, so this makes quite the difference. Any pointers?

(I am 40 years old, max rate is based of 220-40=180)

Thanks

Note - That calculator is based on the 220-age formula.
That is known to be wildly inaccurate. I general it over estimates younger and lower estimates older people. It can be off by 10, 15, 20 beats.

There are ways to get much better estimates using sub-max exercises. Google should find some.

As for the actual zones there are a number of ways to set them. May trainers have methods to set them based on your performance. Joe Friel is one.
