Idea for Garmin Connect Gear

First of all, is there an IQ field for Garmin Connect apps? How cool would that be? Like creating apps/widgets for the web page itself...

Anyway, my idea is for gear. For bikes, you should be able to log new components. For example, when I change out a chain and cassette, let me click the gear and set a notification when I hit 3k on that. Or tires. Or whatever. Just a place to store some of that data would be so cool! It seems odd to default to 10,000 miles. That isn't really even useful.

For shoes, same thing. Set a mileage goal or tracker (I know it does total overall).

Certainly it could comb the internet for a photo of the gear, as well. And instead of a typing field, give me a drop-down for brands and models. If you started getting that data, it would be cool to know how many people use _____ bikes, or who has ridden the farthest on an _____.

Not complaining! I am loving the data that you show on activities. Just brainstorming for gear data. Thanks!

    No.

    How cool would that be?

Not in any way that I can picture.

Like creating apps/widgets for the web page itself…

There is no need. The user already has some customisation options. If they aren't enough to suit his/her every preference… tough.

What stops you from creating those things as gear items of type Other today? The ‘mileage’ on a gear item of type Other is also tracked, and tested against the Max Distance set for it for notification purposes. You just have to remember assign those gear items to the relevant activity records somehow. No, there would be no logical hierarchy that makes a chain or cassette or tire a component of a bike, such that assignment to an activity would be inherited when you assign a bike to a Cycling activity; all the same, you can assign umpteen logically unconnected gear items to any Cycling activity if you want to be diligent about tracking things digitally.

It seems odd to default to 10,000 miles.

Not for gear items of type Other.

I have no idea what you mean there. If you're not tracking the total mileage on a pair of shoes (based on assignment to activity records), then what are you trying to track?

Certainly it could comb the internet for a photo of the gear, as well.

Not necessary. The text fields you fill out ought to be sufficient for you to visually identify the gear item entry you want to select. Pictures are prettier, and may make for a more pleasant or enjoyable user experience depending on the individual, but does not do any more than a few descriptive words functionally.
