But you can only add a photo if you share the activity... right? You can't add a photo if you just want it for your own record. Or am I wrong?

Instead of share on Facebook or twitter, choose mail.
Mail at yourself.

Good workaround. Though would be easier if they just let you add a photo without sharing.
Also even if you mail to yourself I think doing any sharing forces you to make the activity public.

Maybe. But for example what would be nice for those who also sync to Strava would be for the photo to get synced along with the activity data.

So request the feature to be added
then Garmin can decide if this is something they want (as opposed to need) to provide to users
