Unable to import GPX files

I am trying to import GPX files from the Ultratrail Australia web page. Literally hundreds of people have downloaded these without a problem. But when appear in the import browser in Garmin Connect, they have a .xml extension and I get the message "We don't support the file type you tried to import". Help. I leave for the race in the morning and I need the course on my watch as its 100 km and very complex.

I've been having a similar issue for the past few days. Using connect.garmin.com website, GPX files will not import from Chrome or Microsoft Edge on Win 10 or Chrome from my Android phone. Previously had no issues doing either.
  • GPx files not uploading

Tried uploading GPX files in to gramin connect website via the dashboard and just keep getting the following message when I try and import the data 'an error occurred with your upload. Please try again later'
  • Yeah, I'm having issues as well. It seems to upload the .GPX file, but I'll be damned if I can actually see it anywhere on my Garmin Connect profile! Its not appearing as an activity, nor as a course. Any one know where they are supposed to end up?
  • Check the date the file was created. It's possible Garmin Connect is uploading the file to one of those dates. Had this happen with a gpx file for the Goldfields Track that was created in 2011.

    Edit.
Just tested and the file is uploaded to 1 Jan 2010. If you choose 'view details' after upload, you'll get taken to it.

    Edit. Edit.
My reply was aimed at the OP. @mike.austin You might want to check the date in the file too. Open it with a text editor and look at the data timestamps.

There are problems with some GPX files that do not have timestamps that need to be put through something like GPSspies or whatever before they will be accepted

The files I'm having problems with never show 'view details'. They appear to upload but then nothing happens and the only option is to delete. I was able to upload a file from my Forerunner to the site this morning and it works (got the 'view details'), but tried a GPX recorded from another source and saw this problem. The file is good as it uploads to RideWithGPS without issues. I've also uploaded GPX files from the same source to Garmin Connect before without issues.
  • If you want the file on your watch, easiest is to connect the watch to a computer, browse to the NewFiles directory on the watch and copy the GPX (not XML) there.

Garmin Connnect is very picky about what files it swallows. Each recorded data point must have a valid timestamp. Many websites you can export from don't have this. You can fix those files with various tools, but not until the race in a few hours :)
