How to plot a trail run? Help!

I'm new to Garmin, and I have recently got myself fenix 5X. I'm most happy with it. I want to plot a trail run on Garmin Connect but it only gives me google maps to plot with and it doesn't show trails or paths. The maps on my watch do but I want to plot a route and upload it. How can I get the maps on garmin connect, to show trails and paths?
  • Not all trails are routable, and most are not visible in the normal map view. You can switch to satellite view, click on Map at the top and make the change. You can also switch between Google and OpenStreetMap by clicking on Google.

I create my routes in satellite view, zooming in where necessary to see the trails I want to follow. If I'm lucky some of the trail is routable, in which case I can leave 'Stay on Roads' checked and the course will follow the trail. When it isn't, uncheck that box and click points along the trail manually. For longer routes it can be time consuming but if your trail is clear in satellite view then it's not too bad. Trying to follow trails in dense bush can be challenging in which case you have to make a best guess as to where the actual trail goes.

Here's an example where there's a mix of the two methods - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/14406216 and one that used all routable trails - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/14816577
