Steps for a Given Activity

When I click on any activity on the connect website, it shows me a whole lot of information such as distance, time, pace, calories, elevation gain, HR, cadence etc. But nowhere is the number of Steps shown during this activity. This is also true both on my Watch (Vivoactive HR) and the iPhone app. Anyone have any idea why Garmin elects not to show step information. I know I can do the calculation before and after but often I don't remember to look before starting the activity or after completing it.

Edit: I know that I can list the table of all activities on the Connect website and Add/View the Step information but this is extremely cumbersome. Also does not show on the device and iOS phone app.
  • I don't think you can and for an activity watch, I find it stupid too.

You only have to add the column to the table and (re)position it once to make it easily visible by all subsequent refreshes of the Activities table. How “extremely cumbersome” is that?

In the begging God created activity devices with the purpose of monitoring performance of endurance activities. And some of these activities included steps, but many did not. And even those that did steps where not a primary indicate of performance.

In another land there was begotten Fitness devices whose purpose was to monitor and encourage general fitness. Movement, including steps, are a primary measurement of general activity.

And like the Hatfields and McCoys you either had a fitness devices or an activity device.

But in the last couple of years there have been a peace treaty and out of that fitness/activity devices like the VAHR where begot.

But they are still confused about which is which.

That said, in the VAHR you can edit what is displayed and you can add steps for the run and walk activities. But they only display on the VAHR.

It's easy enough to write and/or install a custom data field on Forerunner and fēnix models that support Connect‑IQ to show steps during a timed activity on one of the watch's data screens.
  • I show steps on my activity display at least while in the activity but it disappears when I stop the activity. That's the good news.

The bad news is that the steps column in the activity listing is inaccurate for me because it's based on distance divided by stride length rather than counted steps. Yesterday, my activity showed 11,936 steps whereas my total for the day at that point was 11,323. I started the activity with 1,025 steps already done for the day. This is with a VA, BTW.
  • pshare, ASmugDill, BillHart461, and SylvainGa -- Thanks for all of the suggestions. Most appreciated.

And, BillHart461 -- I loved that backstory. Brought a chuckle this morning :)
  • With the new updated GC website, I seem to no longer have the ability to add Step Data to the activities.

I can confirm that after GC website update it is not possible to show steps connected to activity(Steps field is missing).

are there any plan for return it back?

  • This post by pshare provided the solution.

It works fine. But, how long will it be available and of course how does one know it exist unless they happen upon this? I think it would be better if Garmin stopped taking away things people find useful.

Considering the new Garmin Garbage Connect page does not even have a column for steps, I'd say very.
