Difference between Garmin Connect and Garmin Connect Mobile

Hi,

I'm comparing some of the Garmin products for runners and have a question: what is the difference between "compatible with Garmin Connect Mobile" and "compatible with Garmin Connect"? For example: Forerunner 235, Forerunner 35, vivoactive HR, vivosmart HR+ are all compatible with Garmin Connect Mobile. But only the Forerunner 235 is compatible with Garmin Connect.

I want the activities to be visible in the Garmin Connect website and to be able to share them with friends who are registered at the Garmin Connect website. Does this mean I have to get the Forerunner 235 because the others are not comaptible with the website?

Regards, Leonardo
  • Considering Connect Mobile draws its data from web Connect, there should not be a problem.
  • I'dm very confident that all garmin wearable devices and computers are compatible with Garmin Connect on the interweb AND Garmin Connect Mobile.
  • As far as I can tell all Garmin devices are compatible with both. The displays are very similar given the huge difference in display sizes.

The Mobile version runs on the phone. In my case Android. Connects with Bluetooth so it's a much less reliable connection so it never offers firmware updates to my band. Syncs to vendor database using phone digital transport carrying IP.

The web version runs on my Windows laptop and my wife's Mac laptop. Connects with USB so it does offer firmware updates. It also does low speed battery charging at the same time. Syncs to vendor database using Ethernet digital transport carrying IP.

Only the 235 will allow you to transfer advanced workouts (custom workouts/training plans) from Garmin Connect via the browser. The other devices you have to set workouts from within the watch settings. That's what it means.

Now you're just confusing yourself and possibly others, too.

The Garmin Express application that runs on either Microsoft Windows or OS‑X is what allows firmware updates over USB, but that is not “the web version” of anything. Accessing the Garmin Connect web site in a browser is a completely different matter, and people can do that on far more devices than just that which run Windows or OS‑X; a Linux box, Chrome‑OS ultraportable notebook, or even a Windows Phone‑8 handset can all access the web version Garmin Connect.

I'dm very confident that all garmin wearable devices and computers are compatible with Garmin Connect on the interweb AND Garmin Connect Mobile.

*cough* What about the Forerunner‑15 and the Forerunner‑610? *cough*
  • Understand what you are saying about garmin express but basically most garmin forerunner devices can upload/download data to garmin connect

I have garmin swim, Forerunner 610 and 920xt

The swim and 610 will connect via ant+ to my laptop and I am able to upload activities and download workouts to the 610

I can also upload via my phone (with ant+ and a third party app) this allows my swim and 610 workouts to upload to connect on the web when I am out and about

On my phone I can run the Connect app which will sync with the 920 but will also show me all the activities uploaded to connect from the swim and 610

On the phone I can also view the web version of connect in various browsers.

Firmware updates via usb cable for the 920xt and by ant+ for the Swim and 610
  • My understanding:

Compatible with GarminConnectMobile - you can upload/download your activities via your mobile phone.

Anything else... you can't - but you can still view them on GarminConnectMobile.
  • Not sure where you're seeing that those devices don't work on Garmin Connect. vivoactive HR from the manual.

I used the "compare" button in the Garmin webshop.
