How does PR for 40KM work?

Hello, I don't understand how PR for 40KM works. Today I rode 43KM and the first 40KM were my fastest yet, beating my previous best easily. But it didn't flag as a PR in Connect because the total time for the entire ride was longer than the previous best PR for 40KM.

Is it 40KM within a ride or a total ride length that is exactly 40KM?

I use an Edge 500. Thanks for the thread link which explains it. I was misunderstanding how it worked, looks like it is total time of activity and not a distance within that activity in my case. Also, does changing the title of an activity count as "editing" as the record is only scanned and marked PR if not edited (my understanding).
