Garmin data retention?

Hi

Relatively new user of garmin connect and I am really liking it. I have been trying to find out if Garmin has limited time for storing my workout data.

Do they keep it as long as my account is active? Are activities deleted after a set retention period? The privacy statement says that garmin keeps personal information for as long as it is needed or longer if there is a legal requirement. How long is "as needed" defined as, roughly?

thanks
Dave

There is no quantitative duration, if that's what you're after. Firstly, “as needed” is from Garmin's perspective, so if it wants to be able to review five years' worth of data to study user behaviour in order to fine-tune the design for next-generation products, then five years is what is “needed”. If the company believes user behaviour from three years ago and older are irrelevant to how current and prospective users will make their future purchasing decisions and/or utilise fitness tracking, then anything older than three years would not be needed.

If Garmin decides – some time in the future – to wind up its fitness tracking arm of the business, then none of the data will be “needed” any more (except to satisfy any legal requirement to retain it).

You'd be better off looking at the “legal requirement” angle if you want a minimum data retention period specifiable in years and/or months.
  • I've been keeping activity logs for decades. Over that time, I started with a paper diary and then moved on to electronic records with Polar. About 12 years ago, Garmin became my main repository and, after a transition period, I eventually stopped updating my Polar data as I wasn't referring to it anymore.

One thing I do is to maintain an MS Access database so that I have continuity and portability should I ever move on to another brand.
It also allows me to design reports I can't get from Connect.
