Sugestion to Garmin developers about automatic gear selection

Hi everybody,
at the first place sorry about my bad English, and this is my first post, altough i am reading forum posts everyday.

I have Fenix 5, and used to have earlier Fenix 3. Since those days i have found that Garmin developers could consider one thing.

Nowdays there are multilple forms of running: mostly on concrete or asphalt on some tracks or in the city, trail running, treadmill running in the gym, going hiking...
Following that trend, Garmin also has made multiple activites but they have forgoten one thing. Like their developers, also the running shoes industry is following that trend and you have now different type of shoe for every different type of running, but in Garmin Connect, you can choose only one gear as the default for all running/walking activities.

So my suggestion would be that Garmin should allow us to have different default running/walking/hiking gear for every different type of running/walking/hiking, because a lot of Fenix owner have different shoes for soft trail Hiking, other for Hiking/backpaking, another one for casual running on some track or in the city, and the clean ones for treadmill in the local Gym.
  • Does the fēnix‑5 even allow you to create activity profiles (or ‘apps’, specifically not Connect‑IQ watch apps) such that the FIT files recorded using those profiles can have Activity Type of ‘Trail running’ upon being saved on the device?

Default assignment of gear only takes place when a FIT file is uploaded to (or imported into) Garmin Connect, so if the Activity Type is (and can only be) ‘Running’ as saved by the device, then being able to specify a different gear assignment rule for ‘Trail running’ would do you no good.

i dont know about platform, system, and GC programing, but...

As i can see, garmin connect when you search (for example in your past activities) makes difference between following (i suppose - by system default) activity types:
    1. street running,
    2. track running,
    3. trail running,
    4. treadmill running,

    5. hiking

    6. casual walking
    7. speed walking
  • As i can see,

I'm quite aware of the activity types to which the user can manually change an activity, after an activity has been uploaded to the cloud-based Garmin Connect service, which in turn makes the activity record available to the user to review (or edit).

However, evaluation of the default gear assignment rules happens, only once for every activity, before the user has access to review or edit the uploaded or imported activity record in Garmin Connect, using either Garmin Connect online in the web browser or one of the Garmin Connect Mobile apps as the user interface.

What you suggested with regard to making default gear assignment rules more granular would therefore be of no use, if the workflow remains as-is.
