Is the "distance" report just for running?

I'm trying to get my walking distances to show up in the "Total Distance" report in Connect, and I can't seem to get there. To get anything in the report I have to manually enter an activity. I've even set custom step length in my Vivofit 2 and it didn't help.

A limitation of Connect? A limitation of the Vivofit 2? Something I'm missing?

I don't know what else to try, anybody have some help here?

Thanks...
  • No, the Total Distance report in Garmin Connect online is not just for running, but for all timed activities.

To illustrate the point, I manually added two activities, of activity types Walking and Strength Training respectively, in Garmin Connect just now.

(Ah, I just reread your post, it seems you've already done the same, and already know the answer to your question is negative.)

Whether a user's particular device is capable of recording and uploading timed activities of type other than Running is a different question. I think the fēnix‑3, for example, has a factory-installed Hiking app; and device models that support Connect‑IQ can install third-party apps that record FIT files of the activity type Walking.

I'll have to think on this a while.

Do you mean that I need to use the start/stop functions to get distance to show up in Connect?

I'm afraid you're starting to confuse me.

As you can see from the screenshot below, distance based on Daily Steps recorded by your Garmin activity tracker (as part of 24×7 activity tracking) will show up in Garmin Connect.

However, in the screenshots of Reports pages shown in my previous reply, ‘All Activities’ refers to all timed activities of any activity type, including Running, Walking, Hiking, Cycling, Other, etc. In other words, even though Garmin Connect knows about your Daily Steps (that are not part of any timed activity), from which a corresponding distance covered can be estimated, it is not included in the Total Distance report for ‘All Activities’.

    The ">‑2 Owner's Manual">vívofit‑2 Owner's Manual says,

You can record a timed fitness activity, such as a walk or run, which can be sent to your Garmin Connect™ account.

    • Hold the device key until START appears.
      The timer begins.

NOTE: The device does not record your fitness activity or optional ANT*+ sensor data until you start the timer.

    • Start your activity.
