Please Garmin, give us WAYPOINTS!!

Why in the world can't Garmin figure out a way to allow us to add waypoints to a route? Garmin is so far behind on this, with all the great products for navigation that they offer and yet they can't figure out how to be able to do this on GC.

Please Garmin, everyone has been asking for this for a long time now. It is a shame that we have to go to crazy extremes to be able to do this, from one map source to another, having to change to different types of files for the fenix to be able to accept it, and still doesn't work half the time.

Sorry for the rant , but this really upsets me. I mean, common Garmin , it can't be that difficult.. I can probably find a programmer that can do this in a matter of hours..

Your framing, which (disingenuously) presupposes that Garmin “can't figure out a way” and has technical difficulty, fails to account for any other possibilities rationally. There is no point in making a vain attempt to shame Garmin into giving you what you would like, but are in no position yourself to provide or realise; and, knowing Garmin's why behind its decisions will not give you any power or leverage to force the company's hand or get your way through argument.

    Simply stating,
    • I want waypoints.
    • I don't have waypoints.
    • Only Garmin can give me what I want, and it has not decided to do so yet.
    • I am therefore very upset with Garmin, and blame all my frustration on the company, but take no responsibility myself for the mismatch of expectations against reality.
    • Waaaah! Pleeeeease!

would get your point across equally well, but with more honesty.

Please Garmin, everyone has been asking for this for a long time now.

I haven't, and I'm a member of the set ‘everyone’. Your statement is therefore incorrect.

Are you serious, have you read how many people have complained about this ? You have to be kidding me.. I guess you read into it what you want, don't you..
  • Seems like a good idea to me, waypoints. I remember I bought, and still use my FORETREX101, for the specific purpose of being able to save and goto geocoordinates. Of course, you're talking about connect and/or connect mobile?

It would have been useful as a consumer to know whether or not my FR630 (before I bought it) supported waypoints and routes (moreso than the box described). I assumed it did because I figured all Garmin devices were capable of that - why would they take away that basic/primitive/important capability (that was on the earlier Foretrex 101 model)?

Well, it may have been set aside so that additional capabilities can be advertised, like running metrics etc. But at least on the more advanced devices there are some waypoint saving and route capabilities, and hopefully there are apps out there (which should let you upload waypoints through connect) - and then you get what you want...

But honestly, the capability is there - I can save locations (waypoints) on my FR630. I can return to start position. And through some programming, I can set up waypoints for me to visit, and I can save waypoints too, to a text file - which satisfies my needs. I can also program in waypoints on the fly - it's just up to the program, and with ConnectIQ users can program what they want. So, the functionality is there! It's just not at the forefront like it used to be, for some devices. I expect it will continue to grow (perhaps slower than the exercise metrics fad and social networking fad), but it represents a portion of Garmin's sales too, so I am sure they care about what you want..

If you have a specific function you want, you might try posting it to the "Connect IQ app ideas" forum, or at least searching under the app store for apps which satisfy your needs.
  • Some of it really depends on what you mean by "waypoint". On the va-hr for example, you can save a location and then "go to" that spot.
Some CIQ Apps can do a bit more on various watches. My Hike app (CIQ 1.x devices) allows you to mark 20 waypoints, and then see the direction and distance to get back to each one. Hike2 (for CIQ 2.x devices), allows 50, as well as the ability to save them and reuse the on a different day. There are other apps where you can set data on a website, down load it to the watch, and use it.

For full blown/native waypoints, that's something on some of the "outdoor" devices, and this if often done with something like basecamp. (Etrex, Oregon, Rino, and possibly the the fenix 5x, Fenix 5, and Fenix 5s and Fenix 3) The new fr 935 has "GoeCaching" listed as a function too.

What I am trying to do is plan a route for Mountain Biking in the mountains. The pre planned route really helps because when going up into the hills, there are plenty of splits in the trails, some go places that can be dangerous like cliffs, and other are just dead ends. When going down a hill for a couple of miles to find out that it's a dead end really sucks, especially when having to climb back up.

I have planned routs on Gaia Maps but having to transfer them over to Basecamp, and then to GC is a pain. The problem with planning on BC is that there is no satellite view unless I purchase a map that shows trails in the mountains. So basecamp is not really of any help to plan routes for me.

It would be nice if I can do this on GC, it's a great map but it just needs Waypoint for planning routes such as these.

If anyone has any idea on how to do this without having to change file format and such, please, I would appreciate your help, thanks.
