Vivoactive HR Altimeter

Over the last week the altimeter on my watch has started to show - figures ?

I have manually set the altimeter but over time it just drifts off, I have also started a GPS app and it resets itself but its never accurate.

Is my watch broken or can a do a reset and sort the sensor out ?
  • There is a small hole on the lower right side (near the screw) of the tracker. That's where the barometer gets its air pressure. Make sure it's clean.

I don't know what kind of time period you are talking about it drifting off, but the altimeter is based on barometric pressure.

That changes not only with altitude, but also with weather.

    Thanks for the reply's

Set the altimeter this morning in the kitchen at 289ft, took the dogs a walk and tracked it with the walking app, did 6miles and when ive got back home into the kitchen it is now reading 310ft ? Gained 21ft is this acceptable ? but as the day goes by the figure will get further and further away from the true reading.
  • Yes, that is reasonable amount of change.

This is the same system that aircraft altimeter uses. And airports will transmit the current barometric pressure that is used to adjust the aircraft altimeter. Even that correction
after landing it common to be off 20-30 or 50 ft.

PS, when landing in bad weather the altimeter is only for gross altitude. Electronic guidance is used for the final part of the landing.

The error is accumulative. This week I twice tested the Vivoactive hr by checking the accuracy against known elevations. I set the elevation at 2780' at my home. Hiked up to a known elevation of 7300'. The Vivoactive hr indicated 6950', that's almost 400' of error. The other instance I checked the Vivoactive hr against a mountain lake where the lake elevation was posted on a sign. The lake was at 6600' but the Vivoactive hr indicated a little over 6200'. I would be totally happy with 50' of error, but this accuracy that I'm seeing is misleading.

The little sensor hole looks clear. If it was plugged, how do you intend to clear the obstruction? Phil
