Sleep tracking problems

My wife has a Vivosmart HR and is using it to track her sleep to help with insomnia. She has had several nights where it registers no data. We figured out that her phone needs to be close by but that doesn't solve the consistency problem. Any suggestions?
  • I do not suffer from insomnia, but a couple of days ago I was very ill and that resulted in 2 very restless nights and 2 very sedentary days. For that period I'm missing my sleep data, too. Here's my theory:
Garmin Connect recognizes sleep periods by rapid drop in movement. When there is not much movement during the day (because I spent most of the day laying on the couch) and there is not much rest during the night (because I kept turning in my bed or was getting up the get to the toilet several times), Garmin Connect has no chance of detecting any change in activity.

I think insomnia might be a real challenge for garmin's sleep detection mechanism. It is not suited for something beyond regular sleeping patterns.

Oh, and one more thing. Your phone DOES NOT need to be around for sleep detection to work. It doesn't even have to be connected to the watch. But you will get your sleep data only after syncing.
