Garmin Connect not calculating average and max cadence correctly

Former Member
Former Member
Using Garmin Vector2 interfacing with the Edge520 I've noticed that Garmin Connect records the average and max cadence as 1RPM - this first occurred on Thursday 16th February and has continued for all subsequent workouts.
The graph (over time) displays the cadence correctly, but the garmin connect website (and android app) both show erroneous values ie:

Bike Cadence
1 rpm
Avg Cadence
1 rpm
Max Cadence

The same data uploaded to Training Peaks shows the correct average and max values, and analysis of the tcx file show that cadence is being captured (as you'd expect from the data shown in the cadence graph). Obviously I can edit each workout and enter the correct values, but this is annoying to have to do on a daily basis.

Anyone else experiencing this or similar issues? Have Garmin broken the Connect cadence function?

    @GFM1011 --

Thanks, I can see my workouts now.

    Here's a good sample:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1584072622

    What you will see:
Graphs: a beautiful cadence graph (this means, the data was captured, transmitted successfully, and rendered correctly by the back-end)
Stats: 1 rpm Avg Cadence, 1 rpm Max Cadence (well, this is just wrong)
Splits: (check it out) The Average and Max cadences for each split look good -- but when you get to the last row (Summary), somehow they got set to 1

This is where your bug is -- somehow the Summary calculations got the wrong value.

Connect Mobile (Android) shows exactly the same numbers in exactly the same places.

    chipchopchippy says:
    >> So...given that this behaviour has only been apparent since February 16th ...

Feb 13th was my last "good" one, and Feb 15th was my first "bad" one

    >> ... I'm guessing that a change has been implemented which now calculates cadence in relation to DistanceMeter

For what it's worth: my workouts are on a spin bike -- so the distance will always be 0, elevation gain/loss will always be 0, and all speed stats will always be 0. If any of those zeroes are somehow affecting the Cadence summary, well, uh, back to the drawing board guys :-)

Thanks for posting links to the activities and providing more information. The only correlation between the activities posted is changing the title of the activity.

chipchopchippy changed the title and distance information and GrandWaz00 has only changed the title. I still have not been able to recreate the issue, but clearly something is going on. Figuring out what specifically is causing the issue will allow it to be corrected faster.

    Can you all provide:
How are typically uploading the activities?
Where specifically are you changing the title in Garmin Connect online or GCM?
If you export a FIT file for an affected activity, delete the activity, and then re-upload and don't change the title does the Cadence value change?

    >> How are typically uploading the activities?

When workout is done, it seems to automatically upload via my phone, and I'll get a notification "your activity is ready to view".
But even if not, when I fire up GCM, it automatically synchs with the watch.

    >> Where specifically are you changing the title in Garmin Connect online or GCM?

I edit the title in GCM. That's the only field that I touch.

    >> If you export a FIT file for an affected activity, delete the activity, and then re-upload and don't change the title does the Cadence value change?

Well, I exported the FIT, and I can see an option in the gear icon to delete the activity -- but, how do I re-upload the FIT file? I've never done that before. Thanks!

I had a bit of a scare after I deleted the activity but couldn't locate the "import" function -- finally found it under the plus sign in the upper right corner of the modern/activities page.

Although I had exported the raw data from Connect Web, I chose to upload the fit file that was in the ACTIVITY folder on the watch.

    It is here:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1587774887

and does indeed have the correct cadence values in all the expected places, on both Connect Web, and Connect Mobile (Android).

I went ahead and changed the title (on Connect Web this time).
Page refresh still shows correct values.
GCM showed the title change immediately, and all cadence values show correctly.

So editing the activity name on GCM messes up the cadence values, huh?
You just can't make this stuff up.

    GrandWaz00,

Thank you for providing the requested information. I agree with your conclusion that editing the title in Garmin Connect Mobile might be causing the cadence value to change, even though I have yet to be able to recreate it. It is clear from the few users that have reported the issue that something is going on, and we are working with the Garmin Connect Mobile team to continue to investigate.

I am using an iPhone 6S with the latest app version. Are you using iOS or Android and what is your app version?

    Thanks again for the information.

    Samsung Galaxy S5, Model SM-G900V, Android v6.0.1
    GCM version 3.15
Oh, that's interesting, that release of GCM is dated 2/13, so I probably installed it the next day, and then began to notice the cadence issue.

I can confirm that (at least in my case) it is the changing of the activity title through the mobile app that "updates" the average and maximum rpm to 1.
I'm using the Android App version 3.15, on Android version 6.0.1

Just to add and update to this issue, I have been able to recreate the issue using an Android phone. We are working with the GCM team to determine the root cause and to resolve this issue. We would recommend using Connect online to make any edits to the activity to prevent information from changing unexpectedly.
