Time Zone Always Wrong on Garmin Connect

All my activities are uploaded to Garmin Connect with the wrong time zone. It supposed to be Pacific Time. Instead, it keeps putting in Pitcairn Island Time. When the activities are synced to Strava, it is in the correct time zone. If I export the activity and import to Garmin Training Center or upload back to Garmin Connect, the time zone is correct. It has been going on ever since I got the watch back in July 2016. Very frustrating.

BTW, the device is Fenix 3. It is connected to my phone via Bluetooth.
  • Are your web connect time zones correct both for user settings and device settings? They can override what you see.

The phone is set for auto time zone and it has selected the correct time zone.

I don't see any settings within the Connect app regarding time zone.

The Garmin Connect settings (under Display Preferences) has an "Upload Time Zone" setting but the description says, "This setting will only apply for new non-GPS uploads and does not change the time of activities already stored at Garmin Connect."

The watch itself sets its own time / time zone (I assume if it know the time and location).

Can you be more specific on where to find the settings you are referring to?

    Thanks,

    Luke
  • You need to make sure that "Upload Time Zone" is the one where you are now, or the one that you wish to be used for all activities. While it might not change historical data, it will, as it says change those you upload afterwards. Garmin connect does strange things at the best of times so, irrespective of what the message might suggest, make that timezone setting relevant.

Thanks! Yes, it is (and has always been) set to the correct time zone.

  • @Luke.Lau If you have had a good GPS fix the timezone on the watch, if chosen automatically, should the correct one. Is there anything on the watch settings or your phone about daylight saving that might be unchecked?

No need to quote the post in full. If not directly above, or even if it is, a reference to the poster will usually suffice

The phone does not settings regarding daylight saving. I also do not see anything in the Connect app for daylight saving. Garmin Connect doesn't seem to have anything for daylight saving also.

The Fenix 3 doesn't have a GPS strength indicator or a screen showing the satellites like the Forerunner 310XT. I miss that feature. The Fenix 3 shows a green ring when there is a GPS lock. I've always assumed that means there is a good GPS fix. Hence, also assume it has the correct time. BTW, the watch doesn't have a time zone setting. You can only set the time to be auto or manual.

    Thanks,

  • Do you have a 'Time of Day' data field or any way to see the time on your device. The 310 had a problem with losing time while not connected to GPS. The only way you could be certain that it had found satellites was if you checked the time of day before starting. If that is correct, then you are almost certain that the time is correct.

Have a look at the time of day before connecting to GPS. If that is wrong, select an activity that requires GPS, set a screen so that you can see the time of day, check the time of day is correct before you start an activity.

Fair to say, it's never a good thing to make assumptions with these devices.

if you are still having problems, you should contact Garmin support.
  • The phone does not settings regarding daylight saving.
The watch is updated with a Time Zone Map via Garmin Connect from time to time, and if your fēnix‑3 is configured to set the time automatically, location information by way of GPS will inform the watch whether daylight saving applies. There is nothing for the user to do in that regard, so no setting is required.

For the user who wants control, he/she can configure the watch to require manual clock setting – in which case there is also no need for a separate daylight saving setting.
  • If you haven't done so, it might be worth connecting to Garmin Express and through to Garmin Connect just make sure everything is up to date and the latest timezone map is installed.
  • I learned the hard way a few years ago not to set my watch manually. Although there are times when you have no choice, in my experience it usually causes more issues than it solves.
