HR for Swimming to 3rd party

Hello,

I have a Fenix 3 HR with the HRM-SWIM band. Garmin connect seems to receive the heart rate data fine and I can analyze the data there, etc. However when it kicks over to trainingpeaks and strava the heart rate data is gone. When cycling and running or any other event where I attach heart rate data it is pushed over to those two sites fine. It seems to be only with the swim data where it is removed.

Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this or if this is a feature limitation? Pushing the data to trainingpeaks is important for the TSB and TSS scores from what I can tell. I opened a ticket with them but given that it is also doing it with strava I assumed it was a Garmin issue.

Thanks!
  • It's quite likely that Strava and Training Peaks both cannot parse the HR in the swim .fit file. They won't be used to having it.

sorry forgot to mention I opened a case with trainingpeaks as well. They just have m-f support and I figured I would ask if anyone else had similar problems.

For future reference here is what trainingpeaks has said:

Thanks for the message. Not having the heart rate does not impact your CTL/ATL/TSB at all. Swim TSS is calculated based on pace, so swim heart rate data is supplemental.

Because of how Garmin writes the data in the new heart rate swim strap we are not able to interpret the files sent to us via the Garmin Connect/TrainingPeaks auto sync which is what caused the missing data issue. The workaround at the moment is to export the file from Garmin Connect as a TCX file.

To export the activity from Garmin as a TCX, first select the activity. In the top right corner of the activity screen there will be a small gear icon. By clicking on this icon you will open a dropdown menu which will allow you to export the file as TCX. Once that file is on your computer you can then drag and drop it into your TrainingPeaks account.

I have attached a screenshot to show how to export a Garmin file as TCX from the Garmin Connect site.

We are currently working to add the new 920XT swim metrics to our data analyzing options. This is a frequent request and our product manager is aware of the need to update our parser to interpret the file. I apologize for the inconvenience. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
  • It's always Garmin's fault eh?

I guess. It does not bother me much since it is not used to calculate the sTSS and other scores.

I wish garmin would introduce TSS, CTL, TSB and ATL scoring. That would really make the connect functions great.
