Conflict between Garmin Forerunner cals and MyFitnesspal

I measure activity on my Garmin Forerunner for the day, then sync it to Myfitnesspal, but the calories never seem to agree. Today. Garmin gave me 215 active kcalories, so I sync it to MFP which tells me I've only earned 8 kcal from exercise! Any ideas why? Sometimes it seems to agree quite well, but most times not.

I tried to upload files showing this, but keep getting an exclamation mark after them (jpg, only 30 kb)

    It doesn't work like that....

Garmin will upload your total used calories as well as those for any specific "Activities" you have done.

The Activities calories are added straight to your MFP 'allowance' as they are assumed to be over and above any normal burn.

Your other calories are added together, and compared with what MFP thought you would burn anyway - for your BMR and a multiplier based on your activity profile specificed in MFP (1.2 ish for sedentary).

The difference is given (or taken away) in MFP through the "Garmin connect calorie adjustment"

if you want something to log straight to MFP as a specific additional calories you need to do it as an "activity". these are factored in the adjustment as they are added to MFP's idea of your BMR multiplier.
  • Thanks, That makes sense, I think. I'll think about it

Just a quick question: "Garmin connect calorie adjustment" - this is somewhere in MFP? Could you point me towards it, please?

Yes - you should see it in the "Exercise" tab diary

if it's not there, make sure you turned on step integration with Garmin at Apps -> Steps
