Indoor Treadmill Inaccurate Mileage

Former Member

I have a vivoactive HR, it's fairly new (replacement for a bad vivoactive). I notice that when I am running indoors on a treadmill, it is consistently over-reporting my mileage. I have found this on several different treadmills at the gym and at my home, so I don't think it's the treadmill that's off. It is consistently reporting 1 extra mile for every 5 miles I run. It seems to be accurate in every other way - running outdoors with the GPS, step counts seem accurate, etc. What can I do about this?

Have you set a custom stride length? It may think your strides are longer than they actually are.
  • Firstly, it needs a few outdoor runs to calibrate.

Secondly, how can you be sure the treadmill is accurate? The ones I've used didn't even have an accurate stopwatch.

Thirdly, is your form on the treadmill the same as it is outside? Do you hold on to the rails? Because that will throw out the accuracy. If you want better accuracy, a foot pod is a good investment. It also needs to be calibrated outside to be accurate indoors.
