completed calendar workout upload to Garmin connect creates new workout

So I created workouts and added them to my calendar and the downloaded them to my fenix3 hr, which all worked great. I then did the workouts and when it automatically uploaded them to Garmin connect it did not update the workout on the calendar but created new workouts. Leaving the original workout empty. So now I have the whole planned workout with no data and a new workout with one large workout with splits.

I don't see why if i start the actual workout on my device it doesn't know to upload and update the current correct workout created on connect?

Am I missing something? If I go into my device there is only workout saved and it is named what it should be from connect?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to use Garmin connect for my training but if I constantly have to modify every workout I won't be using it.

Thanks

A custom workout, in Garmin's terms (regardless of how you think of it, or prefer to use the feature operationally) is a blueprint for an activity session. When you start a workout on your Garmin wearable, the device will run you through the workout's steps and provide guidance (including alerts when you're outside of target zones, etc.), without in any way forcing you as the user to follow them. The saved activity is what you actually did during the session as recorded, irrespective of whether you followed the workout's steps.

In other words, a workout and an activity are different logical concepts and different types of data records, and you do not simply convert a workout record to an activity record by ‘doing’ it.

If I go into my device there is only workout saved and it is named what it should be from connect?
You save your workouts in Garmin Connect online only. You save activities on your Garmin wearable device(s) only. The saved activity does not even carry a note or comment in the FIT file to say it was started as a custom workout, as far as I'm aware.

Why must you modify every activity your Garmin wearable device saves and uploads? A ‘Sydney harbourside run’ (as an example of automatic naming by Garmin Connect) is a Sydney harbourside run, regardless of whether you did it freeform, or followed a HIIT workout, or a 4x3km-at-increasing-pace-stepwise workout. The nature of the run is apparent when you review the activity details (pace charts, etc.) for it, and say a HIIT workout will look like one when you see it. Of course, you're welcome to change the name of the activity to be more meaningful, and/or add comments to the activity record, in Garmin Connect online or a Garmin Connect Mobile app after the fact, but the only thing forcing you to do so would be your own preferences.
  • ASmugDill, thank you for the detailed response. Even though that is not what I wanted to hear, that makes perfect sense and now understand why it is like this. I think I over exaggerated when I said "modify every workout I won't be using it." I just meant going in renaming the workout and deleting the scheduled workout.

Though now after you explained it, leaving it there might be good for me to be able to go back and compare what I did with what was planned.

    Thanks

    Activity not showing in Cal

I actually like that the scheduled workout stays separate, but all I see in the calendar view is the scheduled workout. No completed activities show in the cal view. They are correct in the other activities-centric views.

Additional note; even though the individual activity doesn't show in calendar view, the weekly/monthly totals do.

Try clicking on the vertical bar to the left of the days-of-the-week header row, then select the types of tracked activity you want shown.
