STEPS graph shows calories higher for shorter distance

I am new to the forum. I have called customer support, and they seem to think my data looks correct, but I am still perplexed. I am hoping someone can shed some light on it for me.

Yesterday I walked 4.8 miles, for 14712 calories with a daily average of 7524. Today I walked 5 miles, for 5087 calories with a daily average of 7670.

The walking I did yesterday was in two walking activities - 0.46 miles in 23:41 min for 361 calories and 2.05 miles in 37:10 min for 709 calories for a total of 1070 calories.
Today I had 1 walking activity - 3.8 miles in 1 hour 24 minutes for 1487 calories.

So I am not sure why the daily step graph shows 14712 calories for yesterday and only 5087 calories for today, when I walked further today than yesterday.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have a feeling it might have something to do with the amount of time involved, but it doesn't seem to be that much of a difference between the two.
