I don't think that's the issue this person is experiencing. I believe they are asking about the export function on Garmin Connect. There are several threads on the forums about this as well. It's been broken/intermittent for quite some time now.
You can sync your watch to Garmin's Basecamp software on your computer instead of (or in addition to) syncing it to Garmin Connect. From Basecamp you can export a GPX file. I believe there are a couple of online sites that can convert the FIT file into GPX for you as well. You can export the original FIT file from Garmin Connect if you want to use those web sites instead of Basecamp.
