No Map for activities downloading

As of a run on Friday and all runs after, no map details are downloading. I have a forerunner 235. Is this something I can fix or is this something that is happening to others?
I had the same problem with my Garmin 820 yesterday. I went on a 56km ride and everything looked normal however when I uploaded the ride it only shows the first 50m on the map. The map track started okay but then stopped soon after. The map is the same on Garmin Connect and Strava. I checked my device, the map track on the actual head unit is also missing apart from the first little bit. So it seems that the actual device does not record the track data but it is still recording all the other things okay. The problem is the device but is it software or hardware, I think software because people with different devices seem to be experiencing it. I have firmware version 8.80. My friend had a similar thing on his Garmin 810 last week.
Kudos for searching but this thread was last commented on in Jan 2017. Quite possibly something different but with a similar outcome. As an aside, I'm not seeing problems with my 935.
