(910XT) Adding a course using .fit file

Hello.

How can I add a new course using a .fit file on my 910XT?

I'm running a trail ultramarathon with my 910XT, and they provided a .fit file of the course (also a .kmz file for Google Earth). After looking at what others said, I tried to add it to the NewFiles folder of the device on my computer, hoping that would create the course after syncing. No use.

Now my old 610 has a Courses folder (although it doesn't support courses!), that I don't see with my 910XT.

Apologies if this should be straightforward, and I'm missing something clear!

Thanks.
  • I've been through this recently and although my device is the 310xt I suspect the case will be similar with the 910xt. I think the 910xt accepts only crs files as course (I might be mistaken, though), so a fit file might not work as such.

    Anyway, here we go:

First, try to import the fit file as an activity into your Garmin Connect account (you have one, don't you?). Now there are two possibilities. Either the fit file contains an activity in which case it will import without issues and everything now becomes easy or it contains data of different sort in which case it gets more complicated, albeit not hopeless.

    1. The easy case
So you have successfully imported the fit file as an activity to garmin connect. Now save that activity as a course, then go to the "Courses" section and send the course to your device. Hopefuly it works although I never tried it myself.

    2. The hard case.
If the above didn't work you can try the following (that's how I've managed it anyway). First try the following procedure with the fit file and if that doesn't work try the kmz.
    • Upload the file to http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do;?language=en and covert it to crs (select Garmin Course CRS from the list).
    • Install Garmin Training Center and Garmin ANT Agent software. Make sure ANT Agent is paired with your watch.
    • Import the newly converted crs file to Garmin Training Center.
    • Click the "Send to device" button. Now the file will be tranferred to ANT Agent and ANT Agent will automatically do the job of transferring the course to your watch.

Now there are some caveats to keep in mind. I'm not sure if the ANT Agent can be installed on a computer with Garmin Express already installed. In my case it didn't work and I had to find a second computer without Garmin Express. Another issue is that if the original course file contains waypoints without elevation data the conversion tool will set the elevation for those points to 0, thus screwing up the elevation profile completely. And last thing, be prepared that ANT Agent and Training Center will attempt to sync all the data from your watch. In most cases this should not be a problem, but it's something to be aware of.

    Anyway, here we go:

Thank you so much for your reply!

First solution didn't work. Before I scramble through the second, I converted the .fit to GPX and it worked!
  • Great, then, good luck on race day.
