Newbie - Activity Type on connect.garmin vs those in Fenix 3 HR

Howdy!

Digging into the activity types on connect.garmin.com, I see there are choices including "Driving", "ATV" and "Motorcycling". I'd like to set up an Activity for ATV or Motorcycling but they don't show up in the watch. How do you use these types?

I set up a custom activity tonight just to see how that worked. It's on the phone, but the name/type does not sync to the mobile or web-based connect apps. Is it supposed to? If not, how do I get my custom activity type to register in either the IOS or Web connect apps?

Thank you - and please forgive me if these are rookie questions. :)
  • It's on the phone, but the name/type does not sync to the mobile or web-based connect apps. Is it supposed to?
No. Several users have voice their desire (or ultimately ill-founded expectation) for the names they chose for the custom activity profiles to be regarded as the intended activity type, but that is not how it works in Garmin's design, as far as I can surmise. The name is just a name, without carrying any significance as if it was metadata for the activities recorded.

If not, how do I get my custom activity type to register in either the IOS or Web connect apps?
You manually change the activity type in the app or in the browser, after an activity has been synced and uploaded to the cloud-based Garmin Connect service. The only other alternative, if you want the intended activity type to be set without subsequent manual intervention, is to commission or develop, then install and run, a Connect‑IQ app that will create custom FIT files with that activity type on your watch.
  • There are a few extra sports that can be added by way of Connect IQ apps on your watch, but the list of actual sports types available in Connect IQ is only 20 types long (and not all of those are available on all watches, and some are already available in native apps. ("run" for example))

You can name things differently once the are uploaded to GC (driving for example) as more of a note to you

On some watches you can have an alternative profile for walking named "Dog walk" for example, but all that really does is make it easier for you to pick the "walk" settings you want to use. You can have different data screens for "Dog Walk" than normal "walk", for example, but they are both still recorded just as a "walk"
