Course Distance Does Not Update Activity Distance

On a daily basis I edit my activities (e.g. my daily bike commute) in Connect to include Activity Name, Activity Type, Course and Event Type. I also, however, need to edit/enter the Distance as it defaults to 0.00. I would expect that since I have entered a specific course which has a defined distance that the activity distance would update with that of the course. Am I doing something wrong or is the software functioning as designed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On Garmin Connect your activity is separate from the course. What device are you using? On most Garmin fitness devices when you do a course you have to press start to start activity tracking (GPS logging). When finished press stop, then reset to save the activity.
