Unable to export TCX, GPX, or Google Earth

When I am trying to export an activity, I get this error:

HTTP Status 403 - You do not have sufficient privileges to view the activity with id 610947649.

type Status report

message You do not have sufficient privileges to view the activity with id 610947649.

description Access to the specified resource (You do not have sufficient privileges to view the activity with id 610947649.) has been forbidden.
JBossWeb/2.0.0.GA

I end up going to the old Garmin Connect and exporting from there, but when that goes away then what? Anyone else get this error?

I contacted the support, but they cannot help. I got this answer:
Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.
I am sorry to hear that you are having issues, and I am happy to help.
I would recommend trying again using another web browser. Our website supports Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari (MAC).

Haha, another webbrowser, on a http 500 server error.
  • Same issue for me too. Been experiencing the HTTP Status 500 - System error : Invalid or empty activity error for multiple weeks now when trying to export a TCX. Having to use the workaround exporting the full file and extracting it before I can import into golden cheetah.

Should we open a thread to discuss better/working products

This same problem has been occurring for the last month or 2, but never for multiple days in a row, getting a bit tired of it. I have been a loyal Garmin user for since 2005 and will look for an alternate product is this continues. When the product was local to your PC we could control when to upgrade and when to back out the changed, I wish those days were still here.

    Gus

I have recently purchased Garmin Edge 520 and garmin vector powermeter. I can download my ride on garmin connect via garmin express but when I try to export that activity as a tcx file on garmin connect I get an error message - "Invalid or empty activity". I have no troubles like this with my downloadad file from garmin forerunner 910xt. What am I doing wrong.

So, an update from me. After have done a power cycle on my phone. I went out testing the watch. This seem to have solve my problem around no map information. Yesterdays run had map data and after some tries I could export it as well.

However, the 6 runs I had last week seems to be a "lost case" they haven't any map information still. So I guess there were no map data recorded.

These two things are really key important features that should just work. Garmin should really focus on getting export fixed and also make sure that no one will loose map data anytime. At the moment it's no reliable. Do I need to power cycle my phone before every run to be sure that it will record the run correctly??
  • I received this message from garmin support:

This issue is something that we are aware of and are working hard towards a resolution, however, we do not have a timeframe for this to be completed as yet.
When the issue has been corrected, the fix will be released in a software update. This will be announced on your Garmin Connect account or on Garmin Express. If, at that point you require further assistance please contact us via our Contact Centre whereby we will be happy to talk you through it.
    I’m sorry for the inconvenience.
  • Called Garmin this morning chatted with Oliver D, said to just clear browsing data, it worked like a charm. I've exported 25 TCX files since then. Give it a try. in Chrome, Settings- History -Clear Browsing Data. You only need to delete the top 4 selections.

Different browsers, different machines, different activities, different activity types, different devices (I have 3 in active use for different types of sport), different locations (Ireland, Isle of Man, Netherlands), before and after cleared browsing issue: all the same result: error!
I've even tried older activities which I've exported successfully before (we're talking 5 or 6 weeks ago, recent!) are now giving me the same error when I click the Export TCX option...

This tells me it's not linked to anything specific: not an activity type (I have the same issue with running and cycling), nor to device (Forerunner 920XT, Edge 810, Edge 25), nor location, nor down to a specific browser type (Chome, Firefox, IE11), nor specific machines (Windows 7 and Windows 10 laptops, even Samsung's Android on my phone and iOS from my iPad - still same issue), it's an issue with the Garmin Download service.
  • Trap rappel

Refreshing the page after receiving the error works for me. Press F5 key or hit the reload button. Normally don't have to do it more than 5 times. Alternatively, you can "export original" fit file. Then import into Basecamp - File >> Import >> change type to *.fit. Then export as .gpx.

Refreshing anything between 3 and 25 times for me for the activities I've uploaded over the last few days... GPX and TCX alike...

    Agreed.

Let's hope Garmin gets this issue fixed soon and yeah, the 'no time frame' statement sounds just plain weird after years of having a perfectly functional export platform.

Has anyone else had the TCX/GPS Apache Tomcat error message pop up and then...a few seconds later...the folder to where you would normally save your exported activity files and the export goes through despite the error message? I just managed a successful TCX export to my hard drive a few minutes ago with the error message in the background. Go figure...
  • com.netflix.hystrix.contrib.requestservlet.HystrixRequestContextServletFilter.doFilter(HystrixReques tContextServletFilter.java:53)

I was wondering what hystrix was. "Hystrix is a latency and fault tolerance library designed to isolate points of access to remote systems, services and 3rd party libraries, stop cascading failure and enable resilience in complex distributed systems where failure is inevitable."
    From:https://github.com/Netflix/Hystrix

Perhaps Garmin just didn't get the implementation entirely right..

In the mean time you can convert FIT to TCX and GPX on other sites, for example: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/, assuming that you can export the FIT file or retrieve it from your device.
  • Where to find the .fit file

Back on the forum after a few years. I do have the same issue for a time now, like reported by many in this thread.

Instead of looking into the error message, I tried to look for a workaround.

Because I deleted the uploaded activity in Connect, I wanted to re-upload it, but Garmin didn't let me do so.
Hence I was thinking about the time that we didn't had Express, but were using the ANT Agent.
At that time, the files from the watch were saved locally on your PC (as well, user choice).

So I checked were that was, and I found the .fit files located in: C:\ProgramData\Garmin\GarminConnect\Forerunner 610-3830910827\FIT_TYPE_4
This is for Windows 7, and for my Forerunner 610, but most likely other versions / OS's will have the same kind of behavior / storage place.

Once found, you can import the .fit file into e.g. Basecamp and export a .gpx file if you want to.

Hope this helps for the short term for the desperate looking for results people
