Importing a .gpx file format to Garmin Connect

I'm trying now, for sometime to take a .gpx file created from caltopo.com to Garmin connect so I can add it as an activity to my Forerunner 230. I'm pacing someone this weekend in a race and having this would be extremely helpful. The file format is .gpx. When I go to the Activities section of Garmin connect and load the file in through the Import function, it says not all activities were imported. Turns out none of them are importing.

I've been looking into the existing files there and they're .FIT. Do I need to convert the file to .FIT? If so, how is this done?

    Hello clamsauce,

No....GPX files load into Connect just fine.
Attach your GPX files to another post here and someone will check them for proper format :)
  • That upload is for .gpx activities so pretty sure that you can't use it to load a course.
  • hm... if it can be seen as an acitivty.. then i can set it to be a course right?

I also tried the same thing .. and got the same result..
  • If the .gpx has come from an activity then it can (usually) be uploaded as an activity and saved as a course. I do this for some of the trail runs I enter. It is different though if it has been created as a course from a 3rd party. It's then not seen as an activity.

There are people on this forum who can tell you more about the file structure than I'd ever hope to know and perhaps better able to explain why things happen like they do.

Here's an example. This file is a .gpx export of a run from Sporttracks.mobi. Unzip it and you should be able to then manually import it into GC (web) and then save it as a course. I tried it and it worked.
