While searching for answers, I found another great possibility:

Here, one can make the scales fully independent of the smartphone. If you do not have a smart-home server with a Bluetooth adapter installed, a tech-savvy person can make a separate device with components around $10 (ESP32 board and a Li-Ion battery).
I think one can make it built-in in the scales itself and use the scales' battery. But, probably, it needs more technical tweaking.
The only downside - these scales will be only yours. And if your wife/husband/child/dog stands on it, it will send their weight to your Garmin Online account.
