No Training effect from bike-rides

Hey guys!

I do the same routine almost everyday where i do some basic strength training at home, then i go for a run or a bike-ride (or both) and im using the Garmin Fenix 3 HR (sapphire) and the Edge 1000 to keep track of it all.
The thing i've noticed is that i dont get that "traning effect" stat from my bikerides, however i do get it from my strength sessions and my runs.. Is that a known issue? at first i thought it might be that my bikerides had a low average heartrate, but my strengthsessions are way lower in average.

isnt it supposed to show when biking?
  • Are you using the Fenix for weights / runs and edge for biking?
  • Yeah, but i use the fenix wrist HR for monitoring HR during my bikerides
  • OK, so the edge actually logs & uploads the data during bike rides though?
Garmin decided that features are device-specific. So even though trainingpeaks would show you your training effect from the data on basically anything that can get them your heart rate stats, licensing the algorithm to an older edge doesn't sell shiny new Garmin devices.

well yeah, i would think so atleast.
when i come home from biking i almost always open the iphone app and see both my watch and edge sync, so that would upload it right?
  • The Garmin devices I own require you to manually start and stop an activity.
I don't own a Garmin tracker style device which may record all the time, so I can't say if they start activities automatically.
You could try manually starting an activity on your phoenix when you ride and see if this affects your training effect.
As far as I know if you were recording & uploading the activity on both devices you'd have the same event show up twice in garmin connect.
To the best of my knowledge unless the device recording and uploading the activity has the training peaks algorithm enabled on it, your training effect is not going to show up in GC for that activity but as I said, I don't own a tracker device so perhaps someone with a bit more knowledge could confirm this for you.

but i am manually starting an activity when i start my edge 1000?
  • Right. Not on your phoenix. Your phoenix has training effect, your edge doesn't.
