how does Garmin calculate vo2max and why is it so high?

How do Garmin devices calculate vo2max? What are the metrics used?

Mine is increased with every run, currently showing 55 on the watch, which according to this chart is highly unlikely

BTW where can you see vo2max in garmin connect itself vs the watch, I vaguely remember seeing it but cannot find it again?

    VO2 Max

Garmin uses your profile information and HR during activities to calculate VO2 Max. Don't know how it's calculated.

To find VO2 Max number on Garmin Connect, go to the Reports widget on your dashboard. If there's not a Reports on your dashboard, go to the three lines at the top left. Click that to get a list of features, choose Reports, and add that to your dashboard. On Reports, click Settings in the upper right corner. Choose "Switch Report." From the dropdown menu, choose VO2 Max. You have to scroll to the very bottom to reach VO2 Max. Click on VO2 Max and you're there.

To find VO2 Max on Garmin Connect's mobile app, go to "More," choose "Performance Stats," and it's there.
  • It's bound to be a rough estimate - have you ever had your VO2 max tested in a lab?
