New problem with maps showing I've run across the Atlantic in 10 minutes or so

Starting July 13th my runs have show one lap where I ran from Texas to somewhere near Angola, Africa. These do not show on Garmin Connect like this but I export from connect to TCX file and then add the history to Garmin Training center and Sportstracks. All other laps show correctly. By zooming in, the error is sometimes at the very beginning and sometimes the very end of the problem lap. The lap has been the 1st, the 4th (twice), and the 6th lap so that is not consistent. The actually place also not consistent but it is always somewhere in my neighborhood.

I'm using a forerunner 310XT which is up to date according to Garmin Express. I have my forerunner set to automatically record laps at a mile but occasionally I manually cut a lap off at half a mile if I decide to walk. The error has occurred in manual laps, automatic laps, running laps, and walking laps. I cannot find any consistency to the problem.

My real question is can I manually correct the data? Years ago, at least one computer ago maybe 2 computers ago, I found a little program online that let me open the history file and fix any errors like this. It was pretty straight forward and in this case I think I could delete the data point that shows the GPS location being off of west Africa or even change the location to back here in Texas. Does anyone remember the name of that program or know of something similar?

Any idea what I am doing to get these weird data points?? A close zoom on the map, seems to show just one bad data point each time.

I'm trying to upload 2 screen shots to show the problem. No idea if that is working or not for me.
  • It's an easy fix if you have the right tools. If you don't, post your .FIT file in the "How do I repair a FIT file" thread above and someone will help you.
  • What's a .FIT file?? Or rather, where is it? I use Garmin express and an ANT stick to upload to Gamin connect. Then I export from Garmin connect as a TCX. I don't see an option to get a .FIT file. The file that is on Garmin Connect looks fine. There is no trip across the Atlantic but once I export I get the error when I upload it to Garmin Traning Center and Sportstracks. So where is the . FIT file??
  • Same problem for me with my activities after July 10th.
If you open your tcx files and look at the end, you will see that the version of garmin Connect API has changed from 16.13 to 16.14
No solution to import my tcx files into Sporttracks since this change.
    any ideas ?

It could be that Garmin Connect is filtering out the wayward point, but it is still there when exported to TCX.

The .FIT file is what is recorded by your device and is normally found in the Activities folder when you connect your device to your computer. I'm not how it works with the ANT Stick, but when you connect using USB you can see it as an Explorer window should open up when you connect your device.

no, using an ant stick nothing gets put on my computer. It goes directly to Garmin connect. The only way to get it to my computer is to export it from garmin connect. I export as tcx so I can put it into training center and sportstracks. I'll upload a screen shot of the export options.

    Same problem since July 10 (?) : 1h running activity, 5'260 km !

What I did to correct the wrong GPX (or TCX) file :
    - Renamed the file "activity_123456789.gpx.xml" (wrong format since 10th July produced when exporting from Garmin Connect) to .gpx (or .tcx)
    - Opened the file with a GPX-Editor (a Mac version, bought via Apple-store; others free, Google-search !)
    - Deleted the wrong point at the end of the file (last point cordon. long = 0, lat = 0)
    - saved the file

    Sorry for my poor English

I use a text editor like notepad++, just to see the content of the file.
  • Thanks, Both are good clues, I'll see what free editing is out there. I used to have one years ago if I could just remember the name.

Your solution works for me. I found a lot of wrong points (with lat and long values to 0) into a failed tcx file. Once these tracked points are deleted, I can successfully upload my tcx file into external apps.
But, it's strange that this behaviour occurs only since a couple of days, because I upload my tcx file into sporttracks for several years without any problems.
