I have a Forerunner 305 that I've had since 5/2010. I use it when I run, go for long bike rides, hike, visit theme parks, etc and can upload via Garmin Express. It only has a run or cycle feature, though I use it mainly for walking. I manually change it to walking with every time.

For my daily walks, I use Kinetic Lite and post to Runkeeper. From Runkeeper, I export as a GPX file and upload into Garmin Connect. I then have to go into Garmin Connect and edit the workout type, the time (it's off by 5 hours), the name & category. (Garmin syncs my workouts to Endomondo & Nike+; Endomondo syncs to Fitbit) I'm a tracking junkie if you will.

a couple of questions:
1: Can I have multiple dashboards, one for my Garmin device & one for manual uploads; that will correctly show as walking? I don't really WANT to create another account, I like having it all in one spot.
2: Can I create another "device" so to speak to accomplish the same thing?
3: How do I fix the time differential? I've looked at Garmin & Runkeeper and they are both correct.
  • I think you'll have problems with the first 2 items.

As for the 3rd, is the time zone on Connect on the web correct? Head & Shoulders icon - Settings - display settings.

I figured I was out of luck on 1&2, just hoping! :D

    As far as settings:
Upload Time Zone: (GMT-06:00 Central time US & Canada)
Note: This setting will only apply for new non-GPS uploads and does not change the time of activities already stored at Garmin Connect.

Last Q: Is there a way to "force" walking as one of my activities or no because my Forerunner 305 doesn't list it as an activity?

Why don't you just use your 305 for everything? You can change the activity type in Garmin Connect after it has uploaded. It might also register as a run in the other sites you use and you would have to change it there also, but I think that would be easier than the process you're using at the moment.

I would, but it isn't Bluetooth so I'd have to upload it to the Mac and I'd still have to change everything to walk. I don't really want to wear my 305 while waking over my lunch or for my short 0.75 mile lap around the park. It's too cumbersome for that. It's a process, but I don't have to wait until I get home, turn on the Mac book, find the cord and wait for it to sync.

Maybe you should look at updating to something that does what you want or using a different app to record your walks?

Tapiriik looks like it will sync from Runkeeper to Garmin Connect.
  • If you do decide to use an app to record activities, try Yahoo Fitness. It's free, uses GPS, and sends activity data to Connect and other sites directly. It will also connect to the ANT+ HRM you have from the FR305.

However, if you use an iPhone, you'll need to add an ANT+ dongle. Most new Android smartphones have an ANT+ radio built in.

You can have multiple dashboards in Garmin Connect but most dashboard widgets will show the same information. You can, of course, choose different widgets for each dashboard and have different layouts.
One widget that can be customised to a specific activity is the "Reports" one, (there may be others) so you can see a different activity specific summary in each dashboard.
I know this does not meet all your requirements but it may be a step in the right direction.

    1. My FR 305 still works fine and I'm too cheap to update it!
    2. I don't want/need another app to track/sync my workouts. I use Kinetic Lite, Runkeeper, Dailymile, Endomondo, Nike+, Garmin Connect, FitBit, weight watchers, health club.

Kinetic Lite shares with Runkeeper (which syncs with health club app) & Dailymile.
Garmin syncs with Endomondo (which syncs with Fitbit which syncs with Weight Watchers) & Nike+.

So if Tapiriik is free and will connect everything with the correct workout type (walk) and time, then maybe I'll look into it.

edited: I tried Tapiriik. It's pretty cumbersome...

Re Tapiriik... It took forever for it to sync the one day I tested with. Garmin then did NOT sync with Endomondo & Nike+, so I had to upload those separate...so thumbs down for Tapiriik from me.
