Actions/Activities are not named correctly after upload on carmin connect

Hi,

My actions are not named correctly on garmin connect.

On my watch I have action "juoksu"(run) and when activity is uploaded to garmin connect it says "Noutopiste Juoksu". Also I have action other which is renamed to "kävely"(walk), after upload on garmin connect its "Smartpost Muu".

Why its not same as on watch?

  • … it says "Noutopiste Juoksu".
    See https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?345960-Avtivity-names-translation

Also I have action other which is renamed to "kävely"(walk), after upload on garmin connect its "Smartpost Muu".
Does “muu” mean “other”, being the activity type you've selected?

Why its not same as on watch?
The name you give a custom activity profile on a Garmin device means nothing to the Garmin Connect platform; it's the activity type that gets transmitted during an activity data upload.

Yes that is exactly the same problem I'm having. Yes "muu" is other. Custom profile should be same also in Garmin Connect, otherwise you have to rename it everytime, that's annoying. Maybe in future updates...
  • Custom profile should be same also in Garmin Connect,
No name is recorded in the activity data that is subsequently uploaded to Garmin Connect service, so your assertion of “should” really doesn't stand up technically. Whatever you name your profiles is not visible to Garmin Connect; and, put another way, nobody else cares what you named them.

Garmin Connect names every uploaded activity by the activity type, and also the location if GPS information is available and you asked it to use the information for the automatic naming, to make it slightly easier to distinguish activities from each other.

otherwise you have to rename it everytime,
You don't have to, though. You do because you want to. I let Garmin Connect name my runs automatically, even if it's a mess and it's quite wrong, e.g. “Queen Victoria Building running” even though I wasn't anywhere near QVB. If I want it to be neat, then I make work for myself; that's not Garmin's shortcoming or fault.

    Thanks for the help.

Any idea why the gps location is not correct? Its always saying eather smartpost run or noutopiste run. I live in Seinäjoki Finland. Should it be Seinäjoki run, or like Helsinki run? I don't understand what the noutopiste or smartpost means...

  • I've had the same issue for more than a year, happen to live relative closely to you (right outside of Vaasa). Smartpost are the 'package automates' (pakettiautomaatti) that quite often are located in Prisma, Citymarket etc.
Why Garmin picks these instead of the village/city/etc name I don't know, perhaps they take map data through Finnish Post (Itella/Posti)?

Yes, that explains it. Option for villaga/city gps location would be better in this case. Thanks for the clarification.
  • Auto naming also does some strange things in UK - it often uses names of local election areas rather than geographical areas - these are largely meaningless to your average man in the street
  • Option for villaga/city gps location would be better in this case.
Unfortunately no user is being offered the option/choice, and there is also an alarming lack of consistency in how automatic naming works. Even though I generally always run in the same vicinity, Garmin Connect has used the following for the location component of the activity name:
    • Landmarks: Australia Square; Queen Victoria Building
      – even though the closest I get to either of those would be two city blocks away; on the other hand, I run in the Royal Botanic Garden and around the perimeter of the Sydney Opera House all the time, but Garmin Connect has never used either of those as the location
    • Suburbs: Woolloomooloo, The Rocks, Haymarket
      – all of which are suburbs surrounding Sydney CBD, but again I would be blocks away from The Rocks and Haymarket on my runs
    • Locality: Sydney South
      – but I've never seen Sydney North/East/West, Central Sydney, Sydney CBD or just Sydney used, even though I'm always more north/east than south in the city area
    • General area: Eastern Suburbs

Like I said before, it's a complete mess. However, since I'm always running in the same vicinity, it doesn't really matter to me, and I cannot be bothered to manually rename them all to Royal Botanic Garden Running.
