Garmin Connect not recording correct cadence data

Since the Edge 1000 firmware upgrade to 8.30. Garmin Connect has not been recording the correct "average cadence" and "max cadence". The Edge 1000 shows the correct average and max cadences. It's just Connect that's not. The info for the average cadence seems to be half the real value. I now have to log into Connect and manually correct both with the correct info from the Edge.

Is anyone else having this problem? Or have a solution? I also just notified Garmin's Product Support

In the Activities summary table only, or on individual activities' detail pages (since you mentioned manually correcting the information) as well?

That depends on the answer to the question above.

  • I suspect this is a spill over from Garmin's split personality when it comes to recording cadence for running - some places in connect show cadence for a full cycle (e.g. a cadence of 1 is 1 pace left foot and 1 right) others show cadence as the sum of left and right feet.
  • me too !!!

I also checked my MapMyRide and RideWithGPS accounts and my rides Average Cadence are showing the correct number recorded on my Edge 1000. Connect continues to record the wrong average cadence value.

please log a call. I did and here's their reply :

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I am happy to assist you.

If you have zero averaging set to off, the number on the device may be higher than what you see on Connect, which does not have that setting. Since Strava displays what you see on the device, I can only assume that they are using just the data from the device.
I will pass this along to our developers.

Thank you for being a Garmin customer, and have a great day! If you need additional assistance, please reply to this email or you can call 800-800-1020 anytime from 8:00 to 6:30 CST, Monday-Thursday, 8:00 to 5:00 CST, Friday.

    With Best Regards,

  • I started a similar thread in the 520 forums. The fix, at least for the 520, is to leave the default category for an activity profile to "cycling". I changed an activity profile I created called "Club Ride" to "Road". It was then the cadence in GC seemed to include 0 cadence into average cadence, thus lowering the average cadence it displayed, even though the cadence on the 520 was correct. A bigger issue for some 520 users is GC including stopped time into moving time, thus lowering your average speed. This just started, not directly after the 6.20 firmware for the 50 hit, but a few days later. Here is a link to that thread. I think it's a GC issue, and not a problem with the settings on the edge itself.

  • A Temporary Fix

Regarding the Garmin Connect/Average Cadence issue. I had been in contact with Product Support and they are aware of the issue. The issue is related to a new feature they added to their new firmware upgrade, where you have the ability to set an activity's Ride Type in the Edge device. I made the change from the default "Cycling" to "Road Cycling". That caused problems with Garmin's Connect - Average Cadence where Connect started adding zeros to the Edge 1000's average cadence even though my Edge was not set to count zeros nor did the unit actually add zeros to it's average cadence. Product Support recommended I change the Edge 1000's activity's Ride Type back to the default "Cycling" ride type. Which I did and now Connect is recording the correct Average Cadence without counting zeros. Here is the Edge 1000's Ride Type change instruction from Product Support:

    • Power on your Edge 1000
    • Select the setup icon the screw driver and wrench icon
    • Select activity profiles
    • Select the ride profile that you are experiencing the issue on
    • Select the default ride type
    • Select cycling
