Linux and Garmin Communicator Plugin

Hi!
Sorry to post in this subforum, but it seems that there is no appropriate one. I'm a Linux user and until recently I uploded my training results using Firefox and the Garmin Communicator plugin. Since some days I always get the following error: Garmin Communicator Plugin crashed; "TypeError: this.plugin.FinishFindDevices is not a function". The version of the installed plugin is 4.0.4.1-signed.1-signed.
As I'm not aware of any other possibility to upload the results: what should I do?

I know that you stopped the support for the plugin, but what is the correct way to upload things on linux PC's now?
  • You really need to contact Garmin Product Support since Linux isn't really supported.

Manual uploads. Go to Garmin Connect, click the word "ACTIVITIES" on the activities pane, and on the right of the window that appears is "Import". Click that and a popup window will appear that will allow you to choose a file and upload it.

You can also try Garmin Connect Python Uploader if you want something more automatic. (I've never used it myself since I use a Mac Pro running OS X, and Garmin Express takes care of that need.)

Thanks guys! Well, in order to do a manual upload I would have to get the file first somehow on the pc. The lack of support is really annoying, fighting for months to get it work. The communicator plugin worked really fine and now suddenly the support stopped. I decided to get rid of my garmin things and look for alternatives. But thanks anyway!
  • You can always just upload directly from the device, which should mount as a disk when you plug it in. I've often done just that on my Mac when Express wasn't working right for some reason.

As far as I know, Garmin never had a Communicator Plugin for Linux, but someone developed an Open Source work alike. So blaming Garmin is out of place, since it wasn't their software. Even blaming Garmin for the demise of OS X and Windows Communicator Plugin is wrong, since it was the browsers that stopped supporting the plugin interface that they use.

Good luck finding anyone that makes these types of devices that supports Linux; I don't know of any. Maybe Leikr does, since their devices run a Linux kernel, but I don't know if they're still around.
  • Thanks

Second option worked for me, thanks for the details. Dragged and dropped the FIT files from the mounted Garmin device into the manual upload area and they displayed fine. (Ubuntu version 16, Firefox web browser. Took a few moments to find the manual upload, it is to the far right of the screen, under a sub menu on my display, maybe different for other browsers / configurations.)
  • Lack of anything for Linux is annoying. I'm also a Linux user and use a Forerunner 410. This doesn't mount as a removable drive and can only be done with Garmin Express for downloading workouts and uploading my runs. Had to completely wipe my machine and dual boot with Window$ solely to use my Garmin. I have no other use for Window$.

@DONALDBURNSCAMERON. If you use an Android anything (phone, tablet, TV box) you can use Sportablet uploader for Garmin which will upload your workouts. All you need is a USB OTG cable. It does cost a couple of quid but works wonders for uploading. Search the Google Play for it. No way to download advanced workouts though which is why I eventually dual booted.
