Forerunner 235 will not display texts from Galaxy Note 4...

Looking for some help...

Just got a 235. It will not display incoming texts from my Galaxy Note 4. It is paired correctly. I have tried every permutation of notifications and even mirrored my work Galaxy 7 (which does work). I've done multiple searches on the forum but haven't found anything related to a Note 4 settings that would allow the messages to display.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
    • Are you using the native Messages app on your Note‑4 to handle incoming SMS messages?
    • Is the toggle for Text Messages under ≡▸Settings▸Smart‑Notifications in the On position, in the Garmin Connect Mobile app running on your Note‑4?
    • Have you set up your Forerunner‑235 to Show All notifications (as opposed to Show Calls Only)?
    • Are you receiving app notifications on your FR235 for anything other than incoming calls?

    Good questions...
It's the Verizon messaging app and not the native Samsung message app, but that's not the issue because I use the same app on my Galaxy 7 and get the messages when I have that phone. It also worked on my wife's watch when she had a Note 4 using the Verizon App

Yup...the notifications are turned on for everything. Does the Garmin Connect app have to be running? I just turned it on and sent a message. didn't come across.

I'm not receiving any notifications of any kind.

I'm sure something is turned off, but I haven't found any Note 4 specific fixes...

    thanks..

    Success!!!

I'll answer my own problem in case the info can be passed along for anybody in the future that has the same issue. I knew it had to be something simple because one phone worked and the other didn't.

The phone has to be in a truly locked state. If you have a list of "trusted places" or "trusted devices" in your Smart Lock list in the security settings and if you happen to be in one of those places or paired with one of those devices the messages won't come across. I deleted my trusted work location, and voila! There came the messages. The Garmin rep said that the assumption is made that if you don't have to unlock the phone they assume it's right there for you to look at it.

Amazingly, that nugget didn't turn up in any of the searches that I did.
  • Not Receiving Texts from Galaxy Note4 to Forerunner 235

I'm hoping someone can help. I just bought a Forerunner 235 and I can't seem to get text messages from my Note 4 to the watch. I've made sure that the bluetooth is on and that it is paired to my phone. I turned on smart notifications on the watch and enabled "Text" in the garmin connect app. I'm using the native AT&T messaging service. I am able to receive the weather and calendar events. I don't want to turn on calls or missed calls. I also have no "trusted places" set up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I'm not sure whether you're referring to SMS/MMS, and using the standard Messages app on Samsung devices.

Sorry, referring to SMS/text messages and am using the native sms application it came with.

Sorry, I was able to figure it out. I had "No notifications" set to "off". When turned on I was able to receive messages but not able to read them on my phone?

My understanding is that these use a different mechanism from notifications, at least on Android, to communicate between watch and phone (or tablet), such that it is possible to receive notifications on the FR235 as they arrive without the Garmin Connect Mobile app being open (but only the Garmin Connect notification listener service running), but not so for what is presented in the Calendar and Weather widgets.

I don't have a Samsung Galaxy Note‑4, but on my Galaxy S5‑Mini, from time to time all notifications would stop coming through to my FR235 (when they worked just fine before). When that happened, I found that going into ‘Sounds and notifications’ in the Android settings, and then (at the bottom of that page) ‘Notification access’, to clear the checkbox for Garmin Connect and then immediately re-enable it fixed the problem for me.

Where? In the menu on the FR235 itself?

When turned on I was able to receive messages but not able to read them on my phone?
So what happens when you go into the Messages app on your phone? Do the SMS messages you know you have received simply disappear?

My dumb fault I didn't have "use when not active" checked. Am now able to read messages.
