Getting wrong mileage information

So, this is the second Fenix I have had. first the original Fenix, and now a Fenix 3. I sold my first Fenix because I had the same exact problem.

This past weekend, I went on a 5 day backpacking trip. I hiked with someone who has a Garmin Forerunner 310XT and again, I have a Fenix 3, that is about 3 months old. Both watches are up to date on firmware. When we walked, and we walked right next to each other, my watch was WAY off in mileage. Sure, maybe his is off, but it isn't. His lines up exactly with multiple maps and guide books.. Mine is ALWAYS higher mileage than his. Now, that might make me look cool or something from logging more miles, but when it comes to navigating by it, its pretty horrible. Over the course of a 12 mile day, I can easily be 20% higher in miles. That's not good.. I have my settings to record every second (we thought it might have been the settings on that, but it isn't the case).. Can anyone well me what the deal is here and how can I fix it? For what its worth, I had a Suunto Ambit 3 Peak between the Fenix and Fenix 3, and that watch was essentially spot on with his (and maps/guidebooks)... so clearly it is the Fenix system that is getting the errors..

Here are 2 sets of data:
First mine - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1200223200
And now his - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1200292797

Notice its pretty close in the elevation gained, and time walking, but the distance is quite a bit off.. Any thoughts on how to correct this?

Have you looked at the two tracks closely - your Fenix has several places where you are zig-sagging round in circles - these seem to be in places where you have made a slight deviation from the main path.

I'm not sure what you can do on the watch to correct this - you said I think that you have tried 1 sec recording and smart and it makes no difference. Do you have an option to turn Glonass on or off ?

I had similar problems with my 920xt a couple of months after I bought it and ended up sending it back to the retailer for an exchange which has worked perfectly that may be your best option.

There might be some spots where we take a break and I walk a bit, but its certainly not 2 miles. This was just one file I pulled. We hiked 4 days this trip, and the days are all different b the same rough 20% (day 1 I did do a different route, so it will be different). Plus, like I said, this is about the 3rd trip with different Fenix watches that I had this problem..

As far as recording, I have Glonass turned on at the moment. I am not sure if he has that option, but I would doubt it as its an older watch.

Might have to check into a return or warranty on this sucker...

    Thanks..
