Why is Training effect wrong sometimes??

Former Member

I was running interval and my average pulse was 168 and max puls 184. I did this for about 15 minutes and when I checked the stats after I was done the training effect was only 1 !?!?
I burnt about 40 calories according to the stats.

A few week earlier I did, strength training and my average pulse was 130 and max puls 165. But training effect was 1.1. Why does this happen sometimes?
Normally when I have about 130 average pulse the training effect is about 2.4.

Has this happened to anyone else here? Is it normal that it can bugg out like this from time to time or is it something else that is wrong?

I use a fenix 3 hr and also vivoactive hr with chest strap (hrm).
  • Check you Max HR and Resting HR, issue might be there.

Do you mean the values that I have entered for my resting heart?

I can tell you that yesterday I was at the gym for about 2 hours and for the first hour I did strength training and my training effect was 2.6.
Then I wanted some cardio and ended my strength program on my fenix 3. Then started running indoor and everything was recorded as normal with max puls 184.The only strange thing that I could see when I was running was that calories didn´t count as normal.
When I look in garmin connect after the run I can see the graph and the hr is never under 150. But the training effect only showed 1 when I was done.

ur using a myzone heart monitor?

these ones do this. no workaround. apparently they dont send all data to the watch, so maybe ur heart monitor is damaged if its the hrm ?

I have 2 Wahoo Tick X and also HRM-Run that came with my fenix 3 hr bundle.
It doesn´t matter what chest strap I use. I have even tried on my vivoactive HR.
But don´t get me wrong. The training effect isn´t faulty all the time. Maybe 1 time of 10.
So for the most part it works flawless. I am just asking if anyone else has come across this problem maybe once or twice.
Maybe this is just a little bugg that comes from time to time.

i have the same combo. i will test it tonight with my wahoo. so far i have only recorded heart rate and it worked np in calculations for training effect and calories.

i have a hunch that if i also connect my smart phone to collect the running dynamics the strap will send less info to the watch ... maybe... then put me in the same boat as with the myzone band.

    Nope couldnt reproduce.

Since this happens 100% the time with myzone straps i would bet its something todo with the straps uou are using, but thats just a guess.
It happens 1 in 10? Only recently?

Change their batteries to rule intermittent battery problems or low power.

If your not positive its both (i mean like betting ur life on it cos ur so sure) then use only the wahoo until the problem happens a few times (my bet is its this). When/if it does happen, repeat the test on the HRM but i dont think it will happen with this strap.

Or just buy a new HRM strap...risky as without knowing for sure why its happenig it might simply repeat with the new strap..

I will do more testing. And I use the Wahoo Tickr X all the time. I don´t have my phone with me when I exercise.
Only the Wahoo strap and my fenix 3. It´s very hard to test something that only occurs sometimes. For me it has only happened 3 times from about 40 different activities.
But it´s obvious when the training effect is off because the calories are much less than normal although the heart rate is what it normally is on the type of activity that I do.

But I guess since no one else seems to have this problem then it´s no big issue.
You have a good point with the battery change. The wahoo is about 2 months old and the battery is the one that came with the device. I will change it and see if I get the faulty training effect again.

Well there you go. So it´s probably something with the wahoo. I have 2 Wahoo tickr X and can say that the problem has happened on both.
But because the problem only occurred a few times then I will continue using the wahoo until the problem becomes more frequent. At Least I know where the problem lies.
Thank you for your help :)

I have the same problem with my garmin Fenix 5 and my wahoo tickr. It take the HR but not the trainning effect. I bought the wahoo tickr to link with zwift, and work well but When upload from zwift to garmin connect, the trainning effect dissapear, and you havent recovery time and trainning effect Disappointed
