The relevant history tcx file on my Garmin Edge 705 is shown as having only 5kb of data instead of the expected size in excess of 1Mb.
I can see that the data relating to my ride appears to be held in various files named data.dat, lap01.dat, lap02.dat, lap03.dat, lap04.dat etc located in ..\Garmin\History\Laps\20\
How can I recover the relevant data and upload it to Garmin Express or Strava?

In case it is relevant, I explain how the problem arose. When I was uploading the data to Garmin Express the syncing did not complete. When I tried again there was a message on my laptop from Windows that there was a problem with the device and Windows offered to fix the problem. I accepted the 'fix' and the relevant Garmin file then appeared to sync. Unfortunately the synced file shows only a few hundred metres of my ride instead of the 9 hours of gruelling effort.
